Saint-Etienne Cathedral in Auxerre
A true architectural masterpiece to visit in Auxerre
Take advantage of your stay at the Best Western Signature Collection Hôtel Le Maxime to visit the Cathedral of Saint-Etienne in Auxerre.
A must-see in Burgundy
A masterpiece of Gothic art, the Cathedral of Saint-Etienne in Auxerre was built in 1215. What makes it special? It has only one tower. On its facade, discover numerous sculptures depicting scenes of life at that time.
One of the most beautiful sets of stained glass windows preserved in France
Impressive and elegant, Auxerre Cathedral rivals all the cathedrals of northern France for the splendour of its portal sculptures and its stained glass windows. The latter are the most precious.
There are 32 windows from the first half of the XIIIᵉ century, with magnificent shades of piercing blues and warm reds. The three huge rose windows date from the XVIᵉ century and are also very inspiring.
Dating from the 1000s, the Romanesque crypt has amazing frescoes from the 1100s and 1200s, including the fresco of Christ on horseback, a fresco unique in Europe! It also contains a treasure trove of collectors' items.
On the occasion of the 2021 Heritage Days, an organ audition is organised on Sunday 19 September from 5 to 6 pm.
